Birmingham Chamber Orchestra aims to present performances of a high standard in all parts of the region, especially those where access to professional music-making is limited. We are an amateur ensemble, but we strive towards a compelling level of musicianship and carefully-rehearsed performances. We regularly programme neglected repertoire or use unusual and challenging contexts to enrich more-familiar music. The Orchestra is funded by promoters, grant-making bodies, and by a thriving Supporters’ Scheme; no subscription is levied on players, and we are proud that exceptional young musicians are not in this way excluded. We work closely with charities: our concerts in February 2011 resulted in total donations of more than £5000 to Birmingham St. Mary’s Hospice and Rotary End Polio Now. Birmingham Chamber Orchestra launched in the Summer of 2005 with semi-staged performances of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. The Orchestra's performance of Lutoslawski's Chain 1 was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in October 2008 (click to listen). | |||||||||
